How do you make pulled beef at home?
Slow-cook beef until tender, shred it with forks, and add your favorite sauce for rich flavour.
Why is pulled beef easier to cook than you think?
Because the oven or slow cooker does most of the work — minimal effort, big results.
How long does pulled beef take to cook?
Around 3–4 hours in the oven or 6–8 hours in a slow cooker, depending on the cut.
Ingredients (Serves approx. 4–6)
- 3 kg beef chuck
- 2 onions, roughly chopped
- 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 2 tsp paprika (sweet)
- 2 tsp cumin (ground)
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper
- Salt & pepper to taste
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar (or white vinegar)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 tbsp oil for frying
1. Season the meat
Generously rub salt, pepper, paprika, and cumin into the beef chuck. Let the meat rest at room temperature for 30 minutes.
2. Sear for flavour
Heat the oil in a large Dutch oven or deep pan over medium heat. Sear the beef on all sides until golden brown and crusty (approx. 10 minutes).
3. Add onions & garlic
Add the chopped onions and garlic. Sauté for another 5 minutes until soft and slightly caramelized.
4. Build the flavour base
Stir in tomato paste, brown sugar, cayenne pepper, and vinegar. Let simmer for 2–3 minutes to allow the flavours to combine.
5. Slow cook
Transfer the contents to a slow cooker or Dutch oven. Pour over the beef broth and cover.
Cook on low heat for 6–8 hours, until the meat is fall-apart tender.
6. Shred & serve
Remove the meat and shred with two forks. Optionally reduce the cooking liquid and pour it back over the pulled beef.
